Following an International Design Competition, searching for innovative proposals that ‘blur the distinctions between architecture, urbanism, landscape and art’, City of Gold Coast pledged $10.1 m towards Stage 1 ($37.9 m) of the landmark cultural precinct in the Evandale area, central to Surfers Paradise, Queensland.

The City of Gold Coast's vision is that when completed, the Precinct will include drama, music, dance, art, new media and public sculpture, as well as creative educational opportunities and an extensive outdoor program of activities. The outdoor stage opened in March 2018 with a performance by Tim Minchin, closely followed by Neil Finn and several Orchestral events.

Scope

Marshall Day’s scope included the provision of acoustic design advice and sound system design for Stage 1, which incorporates:

  • A versatile outdoor space catering for audiences of up to 5,000
  • A riverside hub adapting the existing riverside building to provide a transitional, enhanced city gallery exhibition space
  • Places for creative partnerships, civic receptions and café
  • Restaurant and cafeteria

Timelines

Stage 1 was up and running in time for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.
