The $54 m Karratha Arts and Community Precinct, located on the Pilbara coast of Western Australia, includes an arts centre, cinema, an outdoor event space with an amphitheatre, as well as a new library and space for the local history office. It is the primary arts facility for over 600 km in any direction.

While awarding the precinct the WA Master Builder’s Association of WA’s Award for best regional project, Judge Charlie Baggetta described the venue as “a striking project, well designed, well constructed, and a display of excellence in workmanship”.

Our Scope

Marshall Day Entertech provided full theatre planning, operational and technical design consultancy services for the 500 seat theatre, cinemas, library and events terrace.

Our scope included:

  • Masterplan input
  • Design brief development
  • Lighting, Audio and Video systems & equipment
  • Sightline analysis
  • Venue operational design
  • Construction verification

Challenges

The project presented many interesting challenges, particularly with regards to the local environmental conditions which required careful consideration when specifying materials and equipment. Extreme heat, rainfall, humidity and cyclonic wind all needed to be considered, particularly for constructions and equipment exposed to the outdoors such as the rooftop cinema and external video walls.
