Hailed as ‘an iconic landmark for the city’ of Perth, the State Theatre Centre in Northbridge is the distinctive home to resident companies, Perth Theatre Company and Black Swan State Theatre Company.

The Venue

The State Theatre complex comprises:

  • The Heath Ledger Theatre, a 575 seat proscenium arch theatre with sprung timber floor, orchestra pit lift, and power flying system.
  • Studio Underground is a 234 seat flexible black-box studio theatre with flat floor, retractable seating and tension wire grid system.
  • Spacious foyers, bars and rehearsal rooms, and an outdoor area dubbed The Courtyard which has been created as a multi-purpose open-air performance space.

Our Role

We worked with the architect and end users to plan all aspects of the performance spaces and designed a comprehensive technical equipment specification that would adequately equip the venues for a broad range of performance styles.

The Marshall Day Acoustics team was also involved with the acoustic design, devising sound insulation solutions in all spaces, as well as ensuring high quality room acoustics in each venue.

"The State Theatre is incredible, it is possibly the perfect concert jazz venue ... not too small, not too big. All wood, so the sound is very warm, but very balanced all throughout the venue."

Mat Jodrell, Jazz Musician

Awards

The State Theatre Centre was awarded The Jeffrey Howlett Award for Public Architecture; The Julius Elischer Award for Interior Architecture; and a commendation in the Mondoluce Lighting Award category at the Australian Institute of Architects’ 2011 WA Architecture Awards.
