In the late 1990s, the Victorian Association of Performing Arts Centres (VAPAC), in partnership with Arts Victoria, commissioned a report that would provide standards for Victorian performing arts centres. The goal was to create a set of benchmarks that venue managers could assess their facilities against to assist in seeking financial assistance from local and state government.
Surveys and venue audits were conducted for all performing arts centres within Victoria, and in 1999 the first edition of Oh You Beautiful Stage! - Guidelines for Performing Arts Centres was published. Widely embraced as the definitive guideline for new performing arts centres, the report is unique in that it is the only known reference tool of its type in Australia or internationally.
In 2011 after a competitive process Marshall Day Entertech won the tender to undertake a comprehensive review and update of the benchmarks.
Our role
As leading theatrical consultants, we were uniquely placed in the industry to undertake the 2011 revision.
The process involved reviewing each report section against Marshall Day Entertech’s extensive experience in the industry, and consulting with venue staff across VAPAC and nationally to ensure the standards are relevant to the industry as a whole, and take into account older theatres as well as new performing arts centres. The benchmarks are reviewed in the context of national and international codes such as the Building Code of Australia, Disability Discrimination Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act and all other standards performing arts centres are subject to.
